Web Design & Development
Web Development Professional since 2003
You are welcome to browse this section of my site, but I am not taking on new web development clients at this time.
I'm dedicated to making the world wide web a more beautiful, simple, pleasant and efficient place to spend time through creative web design. The Internet is a constantly changing environment, and I change with it by staying current with standards and learning about new technology.
I specialize in building and maintaining web sites for healers, artists, writers, crafters, farmers, musicians, designers and astrologers. My services include web design, graphic design, e-commerce solutions, copy writing, search engine optimization and web marketing. Based in Fort Collins, Colorado, I work with people locally as well as across the United States. Some of my clients I have never met in person, and many are trusted members of my community.
Keep it Simple
There's so much going on in the world today that there's nothing better than going to a web site that looks good and is easy to navigate. Visual effect can be gained from well-placed graphics and clever color choice.
Information technology has come a long way. I have found that setting up a web site using a Content Managment System (CMS) provides web site owner the ability to easily update the content of the site without having to know any web markup languages, while at the same time affording the web developer relatively easy access to updating the look and feel of the site.
I use two content management systems, depending on the needs of the site. After testing many systems, I have chosen a couple in which to specialize, which keeps my work simpler and more efficient. For most sites, I use CMS Made Simple, an open-source content management system. My clients report that its easy to learn and to use.
For sites that require a full-fledged e-commerce solution, I have come to prefer Magento, a very complex, yet robust system for setting up online shopping with all of the bells and whistles. Although the configuration of Magento can be challenging, for the client the store management can be rather straight forward and simple.
I don't do WordPress.
Internet Marketing & Social Media
Once a web site is created, there is still work to be done. Web sites are like living beings, and left to languish with stale content, will quickly diminish in vitality. In today's world, where a web site is essential in providing at least basic information about an organization, company or individual, an out-of-date web presence can become a liability. I encourage and assist clients to get to know how to use Internet marketing tools to support their economic and personal pursuits.
I build sites with Search Engine Optimization in mind, and help clients to promote their sites by setting up online marketing tools such as Google Adwords, Google Analytics, Facebook Business Pages and Twitter accounts. Web site marketing benefits greatly from regular "check-ups" that can keep systems relevant and running smoothly.
Sure, you can find a web hosting plan for $50/year, but what will the customer service be like? How many times will your site go offline? What if you want to run and install applications as a unique user so that you can control security? How good will their email services and tools be? All of these things are considerations in choosing a web host.
My favorite web host these days is WEBFACTION. Webfaction offers all one may need to run most web sites. I prefer using them to host my clients' web sites because I understand the hosting platform and work most efficiently in an environment that I know well.
I recommend PAIRNIC for domain name registration. The price of registration includes "private registration," which keeps your personal information out of the WHOIS database. Many other "cheaper" registrars charge extra for this service, which then turns out to be more costly.
I don't act as a middleman for hosting, but I will gladly assist in setting up the hosting account and acquainting my clients with the features of their hosting and email services. I can also build or maintain web sites that are hosted elsewhere, but a bit more time is always involved in orienting myself to another hosting company's work environment.
